 | Telegraph Ramp Lane Closure Update -- Updated 5/16/2008 6:31:09 PM | | Due to the continued migration of soil along the embankment adjacent to the Telegraph Road ramp (located after the entrance from the westbound lanes of Duke Street), the outside lane of the Telegraph Road ramp will be temporarily closed to traffic until the additional material can be removed. Lane closure warnings will be posted on a variable message board near the ramp entrance. The lane closure is anticipated to last through Saturday, May 17. |

| ACPS Receives School Bus Retrofit Grant
The City of Alexandria has partnered with Alexandria City Public Schools to obtain a grant for $70,000 to retrofit approximately 40 school buses with clean air technology that reduces pollutants emitted by diesel engine school buses. The technology, the Diesel Oxidation Catalyst System, is an Environmental Protection Agency-approved technology that works by breaking down pollutants released into the exhaust stream into less harmful components.

| Ad Hoc Motorcoach Task Force Holds Kick-off Meeting on May 19
City Manager James K. Hartmann has appointed an Ad Hoc Task Force to address motorcoach issues in the City of Alexandria. Working collaboratively with multiple stakeholders, the goal is to develop a proactive approach to motorcoach management that recognizes the economic value of the industry and balances its operational needs with measures to limit intrusive effects on neighborhoods, the environment, quality of life, traffic and parking.

Stories and photos representing the struggles and experiences of teen parents in Alexandria are the focus of a new exhibit, From Books to Bottles, produced by the Alexandria Youth Council (AYC), in partnership with the City of Alexandria and the Alexandria City Public Schools.

| West End Farmers' Market Open Sundays at Ben Brenman Park
The public is invited to shop at the West End Farmers’ Market every Sunday beginning at 9 a.m. at Ben Brenman Park. Featuring home baked goods, breads and pastries, and locally grown produce, this farmers' market is one of a kind on the City's West End. The West End Farmers' Market will be open Sundays, May through October, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., rain or shine.

Beginning in spring 2007, the City of Alexandria partnered with Virginia Tech’s Department of Urban Affairs and Planning (UAP) to design and facilitate a new, strategic collaborative planning process, called Eco-City Alexandria, to create an Eco-City Charter and Environmental Action Plan to guide Alexandria toward sustainability.

The City held an Eco-City Summit at T.C. Williams High School on May 10. The Summit, which is part of the City’s Eco-City Alexandria Initiative, gave residents the opportunity to provide feedback, input, and discussion on the City's draft Eco-City Charter.
