Snow Tonight and Winter Weather Advisory Tomorrow – Roads Will Be Slippery
Light snow is accumulating in the City of Alexandria today, Wednesday, February 19 and a Winter Weather Advisory will be in effect from 7-11 a.m. tomorrow, Thursday, February 20 according to the National Weather Service. Be prepared for impacts to Wednesday evening’s and Thursday morning’s commutes.
Roads will be slippery. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning commute. Temperatures will be below 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
Here is What the City is Doing
The City’s crews have brined all critical roadways, with a focus on ice-prone areas such as hills, bridges, and overpasses.
Crews are conducting pre-treatment activities at schools, Metrorail stations, and recreation facilities and will continue treating areas as needed.
The Department of Community & Human Services Winter Shelter at 2355-A Mill Road will extend its hours from to 24/7 operations until 7 a.m. Friday, February 21.
To report debris (like fallen trees), downed traffic signals, or other non-emergency items in the City, please call 703.746.4444. Only call 911 in case of an emergency.
Residents are advised to stay tuned to local media to stay informed of current weather conditions and forecasts. Residents are also advised to avoid driving in severe winter conditions. If you must use your car, make sure it is adequately fueled, and you have a charged cell phone with you. Keep emergency supplies in the car such as a shovel, extra gloves and hat, a blanket, a flashlight with extra batteries, food, a towrope or chain, and extra money.
