Snow Removal Requirements for Property Owners and Businesses After Recent Winter Storm
The City of Alexandria reminds residents that, as per City Code Section 5-2-21, property owners, occupants, community associations, and businesses are responsible for clearing snow and ice from sidewalks, driveways, and entrances around their properties.
Following a winter weather event, the timeframe for clearing sidewalks is determined at the event’s conclusion. This event officially concluded today at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, February 12, meaning sidewalks must be cleared within 24 hours.
The City’s primary focus today and tomorrow will be on clearing all roads, access points at schools, public facilities, and bus stops to ensure safe access. However, additional snow removal efforts, including clearing bike lanes, trails, alleys, and sidewalks adjacent to City parks, will take place over the next 2-5 days, prioritizing areas that connect key routes. Residents should expect these secondary clearing efforts to continue as conditions allow.
In the case of the most recent snow event, residents must clear snow and ice by 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, February 13 to comply with City Code Section 5-2-21.
Failure to comply may result in a fine. If the sidewalk remains uncleared, the City may complete the work at the owner’s expense. Those unable to clear their sidewalks should plan ahead and make arrangements to ensure compliance.
Snow Buddy Program (Volunteer Alexandria)
For those who may be eligible low-income seniors, homebound or disabled residents, or neighbors who cannot afford this service or do not have assistance, the Snow Buddies program provides help with clearing sidewalks after a snow event. Volunteers assist residents who need to leave their homes for medical and essential appointments or rely on healthcare workers for deliveries. Snow Buddies also support eligible property owners who must clear snow within 1 to 3 days after a heavy storm to avoid fines. For questions, please email us or call 703-836-2176. Learn more about the Snow Buddy program here.
As always, the City encourages everyone to exercise caution when encountering snow plows on City streets. Even when there isn’t snow and ice on the ground, we ask residents to please give snow plows space to safely maneuver.
To report a violation of the sidewalk ordinance, please call 311 or 703.746.4311.
