Senior Center Congregate Meals
The Congregate Nutrition Program provides meals and related nutrition services in congregate (group) settings, which help to keep older Americans healthy and prevent the need for costlier medical interventions. In addition to serving healthy meals, the program presents opportunities for social engagement, information on healthy aging, and meaningful volunteer roles, all of which contribute to an older individual's overall health and well-being.
Meals are served at two locations in the City:
- St. Martin Senior Center
4650 Taney Avenue, Alexandria, VA 22304
703.751.2766 - Charles Houston Senior Center
901 Wythe Street, Alexandria, VA 22314
703.746.5456
Both centers offer a hot lunch Monday through Friday except for holidays. Additionally, both centers are currently serving breakfast. There is no cost for meals for persons age 60 or older, but contributions are accepted. For more information contact the centers directly.
Alexandria Adult Day Services Center also provides breakfast, lunch and a snack for program participants.
Home Delivered Meals
The Home-Delivered Nutrition Services Program provides meals and related nutrition services for older individuals who are homebound. The Home-Delivered Nutrition program serves homebound, or isolated individuals who are age 60 and over, and in some cases, their caregivers, spouses, and/or persons with disabilities. To be considered homebound, the individual is unable to leave home to attend regular social activities such as a congregate nutrition site; needs escort assistance to attend medical appointments; is without access to adequate nutrition and for whom transportation to a congregate site is unfeasible; is unable to prepare meals and has no one available to prepare meals. This program provides much more than food. It provides a nutritious meal plus a safety check, and sometimes the only opportunity for face-to-face contact an individual has for that day.
Meals on Wheels delivers one hot and one cold meal daily. The City of Alexandria subsidizes meals for individuals age 60 or older who are homebound, unable to prepare meals and meet Department of Aging criteria. Please call the Division of Aging and Adult Services at 703.746.5999 for more information. For individuals age 60 and over, and not homebound but interested in receiving Meals on Wheels, please call Senior Services of Alexandria at 703.836.4414 ext. 112 to inquire about their private pay program.
Liquid Nutrition program provides a liquid nutritional supplement for individuals from whom a physician has recommended this supplement. The City of Alexandria subsidizes this nutrition for individuals age 60 or older who are unable to prepare meals and have a doctor's prescription for the supplement. Please call the Division of Aging and Adult Services at 703.746.5999 for more information.
